Hurricane Matthew: Mica's Leadership vs. Murphy's Callousness

john mica, john mica congress, congressman john mica, stephanie murphy, stephanie murphy congress, hurricane matthew, seminole county post, seminole county news, news seminole county, central florida news, news central florida, jacob engels,

The veteran congressman used his influence as head of a FEMA sub-committee to guarantee Florida was prepared.

By Jacob Engels

As most of you know, I was a staunch supporter of conservative firebrand Sandy Adams when she took on John Mica in 2012.

She was my mentor, gave me my first shot in politics, and I still believe she would have represented us well with another term in congress.

However, she lost and I have spent the past few years watching John Mica as a constituent and member of the press. Mr. Mica has held the federal government to account for outrageous spending, bureaucratic excess, and made sure Central Florida has gotten our fair share of federal funding and access.

Recently, voters have been inundated with highly polarizing email blasts, TV ads, and mail-outs from Congressman Mica's Democratic opponent, Stephanie Murphy.

They have varied from outrageous lies to half-truths, but most observers expected her to tone it down as the state prepared for what could have been the most devastating hurricane in decades.

Unfortunately, she did not. She was politically callous and out of touch.

While Congressman Mica was securing commitments from FEMA along with Governor Rick Scott to aid in relief and repair efforts, I got an email slamming Mica for being in the "boys' club".

Look, as someone who supported a female running against Mica, I understand that line of political attack, and yes Washington could benefit from more female members. However, your gender alone does not and should not be your main selling point to voters.

Male or female, gay or straight, black or white, people want to know you will act with honor, integrity, and respect for your constituents.

And that is just what John Mica did in preparing our state for the worst possible scenarios of Hurricane Matthew.

Stephanie Murphy was crafting clever political jabs (too cute by half), while Congressman Mica was pulling anchor duties on local news affiliates, helping Central Floridians prepare for the storm.

Stephanie Murphy was worried about the Presidential race and undertones, while John Mica broadcast late into the night on national news outlets explaining the dangers of the storm and what he was doing to make sure funding would be there if it got bad.

And that's where we saw the true leadership of both these candidates.

The Democratic Party wants to knock off Mica so bad, they let their candidate go "hog-wild" during a time that required measure, leadership, and levelheadedness.

I get it, they have millions at stake.

But at a time when millions of Floridians safety and well being were at risk, Democrats and congressional candidate Stephanie Murphy were too cute by half.

Safety of Floridians is always more important than the silliness of election year campaigning.

I saw through it, voters saw through it.

Leadership is about restraint and making tough choices. During Hurricane Matthew, John Mica earned an A++, while Stephanie Murphy flunked out.
