Karen Castor Dentel Goes Negative On Bob Cortes, Uses "Black Magic"

Incumbent Democratic Seminole County legislator Karen Castor Dentel, who decried negative campaigning in 2012 - goes negative on Longwood Mayor Bob Cortes in first TV ad and campaign mailer.

By Jacob Engels

In 2012, Karen Castor Dentel railed against the alleged negative campaigning that occurred in her race against State Representative Scott Plakon - and stated publicly on numerous occasions her wishes for a positive above the board campaign. The negative campaigning, which was largely done by third party groups on behalf of the candidates even included a line of attack referencing Jerry Sandusky - a move that both candidates immediately rebuked.

Dentel, who was investigated by the Florida Ethics Commission in 2012 for using her work hours as an OCPS to further her political campaign & shoot a campaign commercial (both of which are highly illegal), seems to be embracing negative campaign tactics this go round. In a mailer sent out Friday that was paid for by the Florida Democratic Party, Castor Dentel hit Longwood Mayor Bob Cortes for allegedly raising taxes, cavorting with special interests, and wanting to cut funding for local area schools.

The front of the mailer is plastered with the faces of three individuals who purportedly live in the district, with the back-side claiming Bob Cortes is another politician that residents "cant afford." Not one piece of the mailer is devoted to the positive outcomes of voting for Castor Dentel or anything about who she is how her votes in Tallahassee as a state legislator have positively impacted peoples lives. The Florida Democratic Party also used a copyrighted image from the Cortes victory party, a move that has really upset the photographer. See it for yourself.

Then last night, her campaign manager sent out an email fundraising plea asking supporters to help fund her new television ad that is set to start airing today. The ad, which is titled "Magic", asserts that Castor Dentel has fought for public schools & that Bob Cortes supports a voucher scheme that will take away money from the public school system. Karen Castor Dentel raves about the magic that can occur in the classroom, but why not talk more about that rather than launch into attacking her opponent? No where in the ad does it source just how Castor Dentel has fought for public schools in a substantive manner, just stating that she "has".

Cortes, who made history this year after becoming Longwood's first Hispanic Mayor & first Republican Hispanic legislative candidate, had this to say about the negative campaign tactics being employed by his opponent.

"Karen Castor Dentel using negative campaign tactics are disappointing but not surprising. She did not represent the people of Florida this year by voting against a budget that gave 300 million more in funding for our schools and now she is using misleading information to attack me. I would have voted for the budget she opposed, and I will stand up for Florida’s schools as she has failed to do so. My guess is that resorting to dirty politics is her way of justifying her failures.“

Boy how just two short years can change a person's outlook and modus operandi. Castor Dentel has gone from a champion of positive campaigning to becoming a master of the dark political arts, harnessing the black magic that so many voters are turned off by. In a recent community event, she stated that voters should send her back to the capitol so she can fight the politicians in Tallahassee who are more worried about re-election than doing what's right for Florida.

Maybe Karen should look in the mirror before she conjures up another negative campaign maneuver, after all it looks an awful lot like she is becoming the negative force she claims to be fighting against.
