Newly elected Mayor Bob Cortes says the Longwood Police Department will be increasing train crossing enforcement following the accident.

By Bob Cortes

On Wednesday May 7th at around 5:30 pm, a Southbound Ronald Reagan pickup truck pulling a lawn trailer stopped on tracks partially blocking train. The Northbound Sunrail train did all emergency procedures to stop, but unfortunately it ended up striking the trailer. The trailer overturned and no injuries were reported. None of the Sunrail passengers or employees were injured. Just minor crash with minor inconvenience.

Our first responders arrived immediately and set up an Incident Command Area to coordinate with all agencies involved. The Longwood Police, Longwood Fire Department, FDOT, Bombardier and Sunrail officials were on the scene following the incident. Thankfully no one involved was injured. All trains were running normally again within a short period of time.

We are grateful to the Longwood Police and Fire, FDOT and our COP volunteers for their diligence and quick response, true incident management at work. Our first responders in Longwood have been trained to handle these types of accidents and their training proved invaluable in making sure that everyone was safe.

In response to Wednesday's accident, Longwood Police will step up train crossing enforcement throughout the 9 railroad crossings in the city in order to promote safety and awareness of proper driving procedures at train crossings. Coincidentally next week is Train Safety Awareness Week.

Bob was elected to the Longwood City Commission in November 2009 by a 61% margin on his first try. He was elected Deputy Mayor in 2010.  In 2012, he was re-elected to a second term by 60% of the votes.  Bob is a former member of the Seminole County Community Traffic Safety Team, a graduate of the Florida League of Cities Institute for Elected Municipal Officials (IEMO) and Advanced (IEMO). Bob is a member of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO). He currently serves as a Longwood City Commissioner and Mayor of Longwood.
