Our Endorsements in House District 28 & 30

Jason Brodeur and Bob Cortes make the most sense in HD 28 & HD 30 contests.

By Jacob Engels

By and large, I have been impressed by the candidates for many of the elected offices in Seminole County this year. From congress to the county commission to the school board, I can honestly say that while there is usually a superior candidate, most of the people seem like good, fine people that, if elected, could be expected to do a decent job.

This is not true for the State House of Representatives. Seminole County has two contentious primaries: one in HD 28, covering the eastern and northern portions of the county and one in HD 30, southern Seminole County and portions of north Orange County.  The county has two good options, and two dangerous, inferior ones.

House District 28.

Jason Brodeur has represented HD 28 since 2010.  He served as chairman of a key health committee last year, and the year before he was the chairman of the government operations committee.  Brodeur is the president of the Seminole County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Brodeur earned great reviews from the Sentinel after the 2013 session for his efforts on, among other things, pension reform.  He is viewed as a future leader in the house for the next 4 years and is widely perceived to be the far and away frontrunner for the state senate seat currently held by David Simmons.

He is being in challenged by the human car wreck, Seminole County GOP state committeewoman and all around malevolent force, Katherine Townsend.

Where to begin...  in my years of being around candidates for office, I have never seen a less disciplined, less coherent, more disorganized campaign from a legitimate candidate.

She says she wants to kick out leadership bound Jason Brodeur for the right reasons.  Nowhere on her website does it say what those "right reasons" are.  In fact, the page on her website entitled "The Right Reasons" has nothing on it but a picture of her with John "The Toupee" Mica and some fellow members of her Republican women's club.

Townsend sued the GOP in 2012 because she didn't follow the rules when she was qualifying to run for office.  Townsend filed her campaign finance report late because she was on a LGBT pride cruise in Alaska.  Townsend attacked Brodeur's MOTHER in the Orlando Sentinel.

In short, Katherine Townsend is not a good candidate, not a smart person, not a good person and not going to win.  She has run a piss poor campaign, and will be smacked down hard.

There is not a more clear choice anywhere in Central Florida this election cycle.  The Seminole County Post strongly endorses Jason Brodeur for HD 28.

House District 30.

Karen Castor Dentel defeated Scott Plakon in one of Florida's highest profile races in 2012.

Now, the democrat incumbent will face either Longwood Mayor Bob Cortes, who owns a series of businesses in towing and livery, and Scott Sturgill, who claims to own a small business but who has, of late, had some serious questions surrounding the authenticity of his claims.

Both have raised a decent amount of money, so they are both "legitimate" candidates, but Cortes is the much better choice.

Cortes has done a good job in the city of Longwood, where he has earned a reputation as a strict fiscal conservative who excels at constituent service.

Sturgill has quite a few problems.  First, he filed Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy just a few years ago.  His home just got out of foreclosure last year.  He has openly advocated for expanding Medicaid in support of Obamacare.  He referred to Rick Scott, the Republican governor as "a PR nightmare".

Just last week, one of Sturgill's former partners formally declared that Sturgill lied when he said he owned part of a company that documents say he did not.

For Republicans wanting a legitimate shot at Karen Castor Dentel, considered one of the top talents in the Florida Democratic Party, the choice is painfully obvious.  The democrats would absolutely destroy Sturgill, knocking him out as a viable candidate about 48 hours after he won a primary.

Cortes has demonstrated an ability to defeat incumbents, something he showed in defeating Mike Holt, an incumbent on the Longwood city commission.  He is a successful businessman, a family man and a successful public servant.

The choice is clear for HD 30.  The Seminole County Post enthusiastically endorses Bob Cortes.
