Protestant Democrat Karen Castor Dentel Takes Communion at Catholic Church, While Politicking For Votes

Democratic State Representative Karen Castor Dentel attended Spanish Mass at St. Mary Magdalen and violated Vatican law and Catholic customs by taking Communion.

By Jacob Engels

Late Sunday night I received a call from a friend who is a parishioner at St. Mary Magdalen in Altamonte Springs. She told me that during Spanish Mass she noticed State Representative Karen Castor Dentel was in the pews, and eventually participated in Communion. No big deal right? Politicians are always going church to church during election cycles working to scrounge up votes I thought.

Having been baptized and undergone confirmation into the Catholic Church in my teen years, I eventually (minutes later) realized that this was far from a politician working the room to secure votes little over a week before election day. I began researching Karen Castor Dental's background and one of my suspicions was confirmed - she IS NOT Catholic & is in fact a member of the United Church of Christ (protestant), according to her profile on the Florida State House of Representatives page. Most people would say it was no big deal and she was just interacting with the community. But it is a big deal.

According to the Canon Law of the Catholic Church, those not baptized or confirmed in the Catholic faith are not supposed to receive communion - unless the danger of death is present or if their is some other grave necessity. Taking Communion is receiving the literal body and blood of Christ, and it is one of the most important parts of Catholic Mass and a main process in the Catholic faith.

Even assuming that Mrs. Dentel were Catholic, here are the requirements for practicing Catholics when it comes to receiving the sacrament:

"The Church sets out specific guidelines regarding how we should prepare ourselves to receive the Lord’s body and blood in Communion. To receive Communion worthily, you must be in a state of grace, have made a good confession since your last mortal sin, believe in transubstantiation, observe the Eucharistic fast, and, finally, not be under an ecclesiastical censure such as excommunication."

Whether you grew up Catholic, had a friend or family member in the faith, or a basic understanding of Catholicism - you know that consuming the body and blood of Christ is a serious matter to those in the faith. You also know that non-Catholics are not supposed to take part in this sacred process. But Representative Karen Castor Dentel doesn't care about respecting the Catholic Church, or St. Mary Magdalen. You see, she fears the death of her political career so much that she found her self pandering for votes in a place that she detests.

Dentel, a rabid advocate of abortion (considered a mortal sin in the Catholic faith) is so desperate to win re-election that she traveled to the church to attend a mass she does not understand. I wonder if Dentel was thinking of all the time she has spent opposing the right of parental choice in education when she was sitting amongst parishioners at St. Mary Magdalen - which supports a vibrant K-12 program that benefits from vouchers. Those votes she made on the Education and K-12 committees in Tallahassee? Or was she thinking about the the banner front and center that reads "Respect Life".

The point I am trying to make is that Karen Castor Dentel wasn't thinking....about anything other than what this group of potential Hispanic voters could do for her.

"I am glad Ms. Castor Dental decided to visit St. Mary Magdalen. It’s a wonderful parish, and I am proud to be a parishioner there. I hope she was able to take in the wonderful worship service. But taking the Eucharist is another matter. Receiving communion is a sign that you’re in communion with the Catholic Church. It is a sacred act. If she is not a practicing Catholic, it may not be appropriate for her to participate," said Justin York, a longtime member of St. Mary Magdalen.

Former Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been instructed by Catholic leaders to stop taking communion because of her pro-abortion and gay marriage stances - the same exact things for which Karen Castor Dentel fights. At the end of the day, what Karen Castor Dentel did by attending Spanish Mass at St. Mary Madgalen is less the core root of the problem with her 2014 candidacy - it's a mere symptom.

She campaigned in 2012 against negative campaign and the dirty tricks that normally come with political campaigns - but when faced with a strong opponent in former Longwood Mayor Bob Cortes (a devout Catholic) - Representative Dentel elected to wage a campaign of slander, hatred, and envy. Maybe she has a Catholic relative or friend who invited her to St. Mary Magdalen and did not brief her on what was proper or maybe Mrs. Dentel was simply pimping the pews for votes from a much coveted Hispanic demographic.

I'd reason it was the latter. Voters in District 30 deserve better.
