Rejected by Seminole County Voters, Sturgill Hopes Governor Will Revive His Near Dead Political Career

In his endless quest to be "someone," Scott Sturgill now wants to select our judges.

By Jacob Engels

Several sources are telling the Seminole County Post that failed candidate, Scott Sturgill, is now pushing himself as a candidate to fill a vacancy on the Judicial Nominating Commission, or JNC. The JNC is a collective of legal professionals and those appointed by the Governor who decide on judicial nominations for circuit courts, district courts, and the Florida Supreme Court.

The appointment would come from Governor Rick Scott, the same Governor Rick Scott whom Sturgill called a "PR nightmare" in a bizarre mid-summer interview with our publication. Governor Scott is a self-made multimillionaire who was already serving his first term as Governor. Sturgill, you may remember, filed bankruptcy and had his home in foreclosure. In addition to shaky personal finances, Sturgill has no legal background, though he does know his way around the court system — the civil courts — which deal with bankruptcies like his, and foreclosure proceedings, like his.

Sturgill’s ongoing legal issues and bizarre excuses for his financial woes were too much for Seminole County voters to stomach, and they soundly rejected him this summer. Rick Scott would go on to be reelected while Sturgill would join his cohorts Mo Pearson, Katherine Townsend, Rich Sloane and Winter Springs City Commissioner Rick Brown in getting humiliated in their prospective election match-ups. But now Scott Sturgill, rejected by voters and a frequent courthouse “attendee" wants to pick your judges. Yes, a man whose only documented experience with the court system is his foreclosure proceedings and battling with creditors to escape timely payments, thinks he is fit to be on the Judicial Nominating Commission.

The big question is - will the Governor, who won a historic reelection just two weeks ago, forgive Sturgill for throwing him under the bus in trying to boost his own lagging bid for state house? Shouldn’t qualified and honest people be making recommendations on those who will become our future judges? Sanford Lawyer Charles Hart, one of the finalists for the JNC spot would be a much better choice. Or how about the Lake Mary lawyer Justin York? York isn’t in the running but he certainly would be far better than the bankrupt failure Sturgill. Both Hart and York are past chairmen of the Florida College Republican organization and neither have had bankruptcies in the last five years.

Both Hart and York labored hard to see Governor Scott get reelected and neither thought he was a “nightmare.” Perhaps Scott Sturgill should put down his perpetual political job application and focus on settling his debts, both financial and political.
