Sinkhole Opens At Altamonte Springs Condo Complex

seminole county news, news seminole county, seminole county post, altamonte springs florida, orlando sentinel,

From Orlando Sentinel -

A 10-foot wide sinkhole that opened Sunday afternoon in an Altamonte Springs condo complex has forced six families to evacuate their homes, officials say. The hole opened about 3:30 p.m. along the foundation of a building in the Oasis at Pearl Lake Condominiums complex off Alden Parkway, according to Tom Dalton, deputy building official with Altamonte Springs.

The complex is on the west side of the city, not far from the Walmart store at the intersection of State Road 434 and West Town Parkway. A sinkhole that opened in an Altamonte Springs condo complex has forced several families to evacuate, officials say. (Video from Fox 35) Dalton said the hole opened in about 20 minutes and hasn't changed much since.

Nothing has fallen into it, and there hasn't been any obvious structural damage to the adjacent building, he said. Six of the closest condo units in the 24-unit building have been evacuated as a precaution, he said, until a geotechnical engineer can assess the hole and determine any potential threat.

Most of the affected families are staying with relatives or in hotels, Dalton said. "As soon as we hear back from the geotechnical engineer whether it's safe or not, we can determine if they can reoccupy," he said...MORE HERE.
